All of the GE locomotives built for Vietnam Railway System are U8B's. Official GE paraphernalia including the GE Universal Series World User Lists, as well as others(trade magazines and literature of the era) identify them as such. GE lists the U8B as having a UIC gross rating of 900 hp and 810 hp for traction. All 48 were purchased through USAID, which also funded the purchase of US built freight cars and track material for South Vietnam.
