Although a nice video, that shows the "operation of the whistle" as she is today. When 4449 was removed from the park and restored for Freedom Train operations, Doyle relocated the whistle from in the skyline caseing to a full forward position beside the stack in the Engineer's side. Also, at the same time a cable and lever arrangement was added so as to "play" the manually operated whistle, and 4449 is still that way today.
Back in the steam days, the SP GS class, as well as the cab forwards, had an air cylinder mounted at the base of the whistle, which opened the steam supply to the whistle. The air cylinder was actuated via an air line from the Engineer's position in the cab, by a small brass lever. Thus, when the small brass lever was depressed, the whistle blew (no playing, just on or off), the same way the air Horne is blown.
