Manned helpers were used for a while on Stampede Pass earlier this year on westbound loaded grain trains. The train would arrive at Easton with two units on the head end and two mid-train DPU. A four unit manned helper set would be added to the end of the train and stay on to Lester, over the hill.

Rumor from BNSF employees is this will come back, but who knows?
