The northernmost segment of the Portland Traction ROW, from the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) to the Sellwood neighborhood, was rebuilt to include both the still-active railroad line and a multi-use trail in 2002.

The trail is operated as an extension of the Springwater Trail that follows the old Portland Traction ROW from Sellwood to Boring, east of Portland. The rail line is the East Portland line of the Oregon Pacific RR, and is used for local freight service and public excursions, most recently with the city's own ex-SP GS4 "Daylght" 4-8-4 #4449 and ex-SP&S 4-8-4 #700.

Further south in the Oak Grove neighborhood between Milwaukie and Oregon City, the Portland-area regional government agency, Metro, purchased several segments of the ROW and is developing it as the Trolley Trail. This segment is still relatively unimproved.

Further east in Gresham, the city's parks department is converting portions of the old Troutdale branch ROW into a multi-use trail. This ROW was an interurban line in the early 20th century, and used by Portland Traction freights until the 1980s. This ROW runs through what is now the TriMet Ruby Junction light rail yard and shop complex. Plans for the trail conversion include running it past the Ruby Junction complex
