The train is a timetable Eastbound, which at this location is headed North by Northwest compass direction. The picture was likely taken during the summer, due to the sunlight across the nose of the lead unit. The train ( possibly Train # 20 - The Chief ) will shortly curve off the the West / Southwest and up to Sullivan's Curve.
For those with the volume, John Signor's excellent book Santa Fe Los Angeles Division has a photo on pg. 410 taken only a few feet closer to the depot, of an E/B Santa Fe freight train. The train order semaphores between main tracks, and electric poles with transformer rack to the left side are also in the book image.
