I miss the Santa Fe in Santa Ana Canyon, when it was single - track with Orange Groves. Matter of fact, I miss the Orange Groves of Orange County too.
I miss the trips to Tehachapi every Memorial Day & Labor Day weekend, when it was Espee and Santa Fe. Camping out at Woodford, complete with a burn barrel and furniture scrounged from the Keene dumpsters. No hassles from the cops either. I also miss following the Espee line home through Antelope Valley, complete with a little bump - drafting on MJR's Suburban !!!
I miss early Amtrak trains, like the Coast Starlight I rode from Seattle to Los Angeles on August 21 & 22, 1979. Spending all night in the ex - Santa Fe Pleasure Dome, the lunch counter diner, and dutch doors. I miss being able to ride a Native Sun PV deadhead from Los Angeles to Oakland for $99.00, then riding The San Joaquin home the next day.
I miss all the Module Railroaders mall shows, especially Central City Mall in San Bernardino, where us young'ens would spend the night camping out at Descanso Terrace.
I miss the REAL CTC board Magazine, from back in the 1980's. I miss National Speed Sport News arriving in my mailbox every Friday too...
