Jim, thank you for the heads up. I learned one thing about a P-38 last year...you are not likely to fit in one! I'm talking as a second person behind the pilot. I went down to Chino a year ago June to ride in Planes of Fames example and when the pilot & I got atop the machine, he pointed to the area behind where he'd sit. I am pretty good sized but I did fit with the canopy closed. However, you are sitting on the wing spar which is higher than the pilot so your chest is down on your knees and very uncomfortable and you can hardly see outside. We tried this for awhile & I decided at that price to try something else. The pilot laughed & said that very few people have fit in there & did I want my money back. I told him that I'd come too far for that so he suggested the P-40 which I did ride in...a great flight.
Sometime read the story of how the US Army pilots on Guadalcanal made the longest intercept over water in history & shot down Admiral Yamamoto. They used P-38s, but a subplot developed when a politically ambitious gent dishonestly claimed to have made the kill. The truth did not come to light for many years later but now that large highway bridge over the Crooked River north of Bend, OR is named after Rex Barber, the actual pilot who shot down Yamamoto.
