BNSF is still using the canyon west of Keddie. The last I saw UP was running westbound grain but I don't know the current status.

You would think UP would send eastbound heavy general merchandise trains through the Feather River to take advantage of the easier 1% grades instead of going over Donner. But with modern locomotives the increased time and distance must not make it worth while.
