Re: How can Metrolink LINK Perris to Redlands? Redlands Rail Project

Service between Redlands and Perris will be possible in a few more years. The previously planned Metrolink line from San Bernardino to Redlands, (Arrow Line), is going to be operated, MAYBE, in late 2020. Assuming the Perris Valley Line and the Riverside Lines of Metrolink retrain the same or similar service, one will be able to take a DMU from Redlands, to San Bernardino Downtown, on E Street. (NOT the Santa Fe Depot at 1170 W. Third St.) Then transfer to a Metrolink train, going via the Riverside Line, toward Los Angeles. Get off short at Riverside, and change to a Perris Valley Line train.

How long the waits between these future connections might be are yet to be established. Right now there are four weekday trains, in each direction, between San Bernardino and Riverside. There are six weekday trains, in each direction, between Riverside and Perris. So leaving out Redlands, it is possible to make most of this trip now, between San Bernardino and Riverside, if you want to wait around awhile at Riverside.

You should also know that Omnitrans DMU's will be used on the Arrow Line between San Bernardino Downtown and Redlands, instead of full size Metrolink trains. Various press releases have said that Metrolink has obtained permission from SANBAG, (now SBCTA), and the Arrow Line, to operate one to two Metrolink trains to/from Redlands, while the rest of the runs will be covered by Omnitrans DMU's.

You should be aware that a few years back, SANBAG apparently elected to muddy the waters and have Omnitrans, (Bus Operator), operate the San Bernardino to Redlands Line, instead of Metrolink. Their new entity is called the Arrow Line. Although since 1992, when the old Santa Fe Redlands District was purchased by San Bernardino County, it was originally planned and intended to become a part of Metrolink, operated by the SCRRA. (Southern California Regional Rail Authority). Omnitrans is controlled by San Bernardino County, and not SCRRA. Just another layer of bureaucracy, added expense and confusion, in a bid for more control on the part of SANBAG, (SBCTA). BNSF still has a freight easement on this former Santa Fe Redlands District trackage, but only a couple of surviving freight customers.

This is a slick presentation, but as you can see Arrow/SANBAG/SBCTA do not understand that this project has nothing to do with the separate, old Pacific Electric Ry.
