Looking at my references (primarily "White Pine Route" by Thomas E. Burg), it appears that #1 and its sisters (4-6-0 #2 and 2-8-0's #20, #21 and #22) were originally equipped to burn coal, but were converted to oil about 1912. During WWI, they were converted back to coal due to unavailbility of oil, but were quickly switched back to oil after the war.

Looking through my pictures, I see no evidence that #1 or any WI&M loco ever received piston valves.
