I second the Modoc. Its where they cut helpers off to go back to Alturas, between Stronghold and Alturas, I think.

Klamath still protected the helper pool in Alturas into the 70s. I think that was the division point for crews in Alturas. After the run through's, crews worked K Falls to Wendel with a few thru helpers. When they came up with the radio controled helpers, that was the end of that.

I don't have the exact dates but I am sure someone out there could post the straight dope.
