Back in the Day, New Jersey was well known for high property taxes levied on Railroads, to the extent that Erie Lackawanna & Jersey Central both cited their high taxation rate in bankruptcy filings. Since both RR's had commuter operations, they adopted a bare - bones approach to station maintenance. Once Conrail and NJ Transit were up and running, they both demolished many stations and Interlocking Towers to lessen their tax burden.
