This is not even a good story about this phenomena, or the cause.....
This phenomenal rise in pedestrian fatalities, bicycle fatalities, and in highway deaths, in general (which had been on a decline due to air bags and seat belts), has been largely been a function of (number one cause) increased driver distraction, increasing urban traffic levels, and higher pedestrian densities in some urban areas. If folks would try putting down your fricking cell phones and stop looking at text screens when they're driving, it would help. Or, as Pogo noted: "We have met the enemy, an he is us...."
Of course, the discovery that the "google" car has an architecture who's visual recognition system identified the woman with the bicycle as a "false positive", and that they had turned of the cars own radar collision avoidance system, and were operating only on "visual", was not reassuring to based upon my ITS system architecture and user needs training. So they've managed to screw that possible solution up, too, which will make for another interesting NTSB report.
Meanwhile, since this is a train site, the good news is that, for all of the vitriolic hatred that some folks seem to have for "Evil Thomas", rail trespasser and rail auto collision deaths have fallen significantly over the last 30 years.
