The short answer is called duration of load. Wood can be significantly overloaded for short periods of time. Judging by the workers in the photo, this photo must have been taken shortly after the car was released from the steel frame that moved it. The car would not be able to stand unsupported for very long.

Normally, one would expect to see at least a pair of steel or wrought iron truss rods to support the center of the car. However the truss system will not work properly with a doorway cut into the car side.

The folks at the Northwest Railway Museum have lots of wood car experience so I’m sure they have a plan.
