Procopius looks intersting - perhaps a bit reminiscent of Suetonius. But I have got my hands full reading Petronius in latin.

My impression of Fellini's interpretation of Petronius is that the director made an amalgam incorporating other writers' input from the period. Ergo he filled in what was lost of the Satyrica.

He was not the first to write "new" Petronius; when the largest part of what we have today was discovered stuck in a book in a private library ca. 1650 there ensued quite a feud between academics as to whether it was a forgery. In time it was accepted as the real deal - the Cena Trimalchionis - and I believe it was the last significant work from antiquity to be recovered.

What is different about the Satyrica is that it is a novel when there weren't any to speak of. Walking thru Rome on the wild side.
