Ah yes, I am reminded of my first job in Oroville at Solano Railcar. Employees would race to get their paychecks cashed before the money ran out. You'd eventually get paid if you were late, but that was a pain in the rear! Eventually they did shut down, but it was years and a change in management later. And by that time I had moved on!
