My understanding of it is the the event recorder did not register an Emergency application having been made by the Metrolink engineer
prior to the impact, and the consensus is that the handle was moved, um... shall we say, during a "post impact event."
The download from the UP locomotive shows that that engineer initiated an Emergency application two seconds before the impact.
Given the speed of both trains and the curve, I doubt anyone had much time to do anything other than say, "What the f...?!?!?!"
