After Santa Fe no longer allowed Amtrak to use the Super Chief name in 1974, trains 3 & 4 became the Southwest Limited. In October 1984, Santa Fe felt that service and conditions sufficiently improved that it allowed Amtrak to use the Chief name again and trains 3 and 4 became the Southwest Chief.
