Interesting stories and I'll add mine.

Back in 1959 I went through both basic and advanced infantry training before heading east to Ft Campbell and the 101st Airborne. I always remember marching out to the rifle ranges in the morning which were on the bayside at Ft. Ord and seeing the Del Monte headed toward San Francisco and thinking that I would one day ride that train ...and I did. That must have been in the late 60's after I got out of the army. Rode down from SF, stayed overnight in some cheap hotel near the station in Monterey and back to the city the next morning. Probably one of the best train rides I ever had.
