I think an optical illusion. At that time the sidewalks on Market St. were narrower and the street wider so the buses lined up in the curb lane are pretty far offset from the overhead.

They did, IIRC, used to run the trolley poles wrong way at 30th and Church on the J when turning on the wye.

The Twin Coaches were very fast. Charlie Smallwood told me Muni guys unofficially tested them up to some high speeds late at nite after getting them on the property. Way faster than the original Muni streetcars. Maybe that's the reason for the smiles on those older gents in double breasted suits. Trolley coaches probably represented a speed-up on those surface lines.
