I'd like to encourage you to go for it if you want to see some of your work in print. That's how all this information got out there, and of course all those photos. (Is there any industry in the world better chronicled by its enthusiasts than railroading?) I got started twenty-odd years ago by submitting articles to a historical society (of which I was a member) concerned with a single railroad. Later, I wanted to do a book so I contacted publishers until I found one who was interested in my photography. One thing led to another and now I'm working on my tenth railroad book. My first book was published when I was 56 and I'm 63 now, so it's never too late. Good luck...
