That has got to be a hard experience. The opposite happened to me when the company was offering early retirement to relieve the burden of high paid senior employees. Submitted an application for the deal and it was granted by Human Resources. No upper management in the organization believed that I would retire. My last day of work arrived and at 1:00 pm was gathering belongings to permanently leave. At that point a gaggle of suits arrived that wanted to talk about what was taking place. They politely and apologetically said that organization management had individual veto authority, so my plans and early retirement with payout were cancelled. The large group was probably because they were expecting fireworks, being I was only a few hours from retiring, but that is not me. Instead just shrugged and said, "Okay, that's fine". They were a bit taken aback by the lack of emotion.
