Should have read "SD40's and SD45's." And probably should have been more clear and said "ALCO C-628's and C-630's." And regardless of the cab warmth, the older EMD units (F-7s, FP-7s and a few F-9's that ran out their years in central California) were, in my recollection, more reliable than the much newer ALCO engines. But maybe that was partially a reflection on SP maintenance.
