MTC diverted the funding from the TBT tunnel and Caltrain electrification to BART to SFO. This was at a time when skyrise foundations were much fewer in the vicinity of the TBT. The underlying scheme was to kill off Caltrain to be replaced by Bechtel gauge.

Mirabile dictu Caltrain survives and will debut modern EMU's in California. Add a miracle to the saving of the cable cars by Mrs. Klussmann, the 5 Market St. streetcar lines to Charlie Miller, the subway-surface Muni Metro to Jack Woods and others and the trolley buses to the electricians' union.
