I suspect aiding in the conquest of North Africa were the destruction of the French fleet at Oran ordered by Churchill, the assassination of Vichy loyalist Admiral Jean Darlan and Churchill's very substantial bribes to Franco to not permit German troops to transit Spanish soil.

Sad about the French sailors killed; I doubt very much they approved of the Occupation. France had a significant fascist movement, L'Action Francaise led by Charles Maurras. Pious royalist who rejected "liberte, egalite, fraternite" he loses this duel and in 1945 has his admission to the Academie Francaise annulled and sent to life in prison.
