As others have mentioned, the Federal Hours of Service law applies, so the maximum time on duty can't exceed 12 hours.

Other than that, the maximum allowable time is prescribed by agreement. For example, in most if not all Amtrak Zones, an engineer can work alone if the scheduled running time between the first and last station of a crew district is six hours or less.
