As usual it is slightly more complicated. The size of the degree Kelvin or Celsius was determined by dividing the temperature difference between the freezing point and the boiling point of water into 100 parts. That is where the name centigrade came from. Since thermodynamic calculations use absolute zero (the coldest possible temperature) that was (naturally enough) given the value of zero in the Kelvin scale, but still uses the Celsius degree.

For those still using Fahrenheit there is also an absolute zero based scale. It is called the Rankine scale. Just like Kelvin it starts at absolute zero (-459.67 degrees Fahrenheit or -273.15 degrees Celsius) but uses the Fahrenheit degree instead of the Celsius degree.
