A zoom pan works either way so it's a great idea to practice on a back up move, even if it's a few miles an hour. All zoom pans linked, or on RP for that matter are zoomed out as it "zooms in". This way the subject is always at the same focal point. I'd like to try a manual focus but all of those photos were done with AI focus on a Canon 40D, the thinking, I could use any assistance there could be to offer. Not sure if it helped or hindered as it may have searched mid zoom. The Amtrak has the most dramatic effect as it was going 4 to 5 times faster then the engine at Steamtown. The key is to shoot head on so you don't get psychedelic lines going non-parallel to the engine's direction and perhaps the biggest tip (I should sell it), is to shoot when the subject is in your face - when it's relative motion is greatest to the camera.
