If BART had adhered to traditional electric railway specs it would likely have been able to utilize equipment from such systems as WMATA and MARTA in a pinch. It is impossible to know how much damage a quake larger than 1906 would wreak upon BART but it is conceivable that it could lose some of its rolling stock. Maybe BART should set up a shop large enough to construct its own unique equipment.

Interestingly there are some significant parallels between BART and the HSR. Both are big, expensive projects featuring start of the art technology. It's about time. By international standards passenger train service in California is sub-par. The HSR will vastly increase public service expectations.

And speaking of standardized rolling stock, maybe SMART should hold off on acquiring its cars. Who knows but what San Diego may have tired of its Sprinters by that time and be willing to part with them at a bargain price.
