I spent the night in Alturas once while chasing the Modoc, and had a wonderful dinner at the Niles Hotel. I still have the hat I bought at the gas station, which has a picture of a beer can and a gas pump, and says "Get gassed at Gil's."

On the other hand, I went to Niland once while chasing the Sunset Route. The people there looked like cannibals, so I didn't get out of the car.

Oh yes, and I used to work nights in Stockton on the WP...
