Coupler slack

I remember from very long ago how steam locomotive engineers took advantage of the couplers behind them to get their locomotive moving before they were pulling their whole train. That kathunk - kathunk sound varied dramatically.

Are present-day road diesels designed to start maximum rated tonnage without utilizing much, if any, slack in their trains?

Do present-day couplers and related components have as much or less slack built into them?
