The St. Charles line dates to 1835 and horsecars. The gauge issue had not been resolved at that early time.

No excuse for Bechtel sabotage, which wanted proprietary and idiosyncratic. They did not have the balls to go all the way, with say monorail. Bechtel is beneath contempt for collusion with the SP.
