Capitalism works ok as long as there is ample competition. Otherwise it can cause great consternation. This is what concerns me about train operators like Brightline which is in the process of establishing a state passenger rail monopoly in Florida. Unlike airports that run multiple airlines between cities, Brightline will be a monopoly running between stations. There will never be a competitor that can offer similar service; this in turn will lead to higher fares. Personally, I am perfectly happy with the state run Amtrak Cascades (if they could only keep their trains on the tracks. Though it's not as if Brightline's record is spotless. Haven't they killed at least a 1/2 dozen pedestrians thus far. Also, being at the mercy of privately controlled freight lines doesn't help matters). I think I prefer the cheaper "socialized" Amtrak Cascades ticket over the higher priced Brightline service any day.
