Yeah, Ron, I think that's been confirmed in several ways...
A lot of the really racist and sexist stuff appears to be coming from one person....
This may also have become a "trolling" game that some folks are into...
And, some of these are the mentally questionable and the sociopaths, who use open sites to spew crazy or hate, because they can.....
Some of this unbelievable level of UP hate trolling maybe only really coming from only a small handful of people, clearly using multiple handles. Some of them are pretty obvious by the handles, or the "fixation" they are hung up on....
I was going back to some old posts the other day. I've been on here since the mid 2000's. And, I wanted to see, how much of this there was back then. And, there was a lot less of the really racist, conspiracy theory, and rail hating "railfan" posts like we've seen with the "evil" UP Steam Program conspiracy theories.... And, even our discussions of "current affairs" regarding the "politics" that affect railroading were more civil.
Of course, it doesn't mean that these folks spewing some of the uglier stuff are not rails, or railfans, I've met my share of crazy folks, working for the RR, or who were railfans, and then I worked with politicians, and the public....
The internet has become a tool for disseminating information, both good and bad, and it creates a platform, for anyone to say anything, true or false. It gives equal space to the informed and the ignorant, the moral and the amoral, to the truth, and to the false...It's a new reality. And, that makes it more important than ever that we use good sense, education, and our morals, to check, verify, and determine the truth.
If you have an "open" site, where folks are free to post pretty much open and uncensored views, then it's more important than ever, to have some intelligence, morality, and value the truth enough to sort it out.
What I do notice, is that there is a large base of "real" and "long term" Altamont community members like you, that come the from the industry, or are folks who are long term real railfans, who actually like trains, are folks that are knowledgeable, thoughtful, sane, and decent that seem to still make up a sizable "silent majority" on Altamont.
Of course the best response, and the real antidote to trolls and train haters posting crap on a train site, is for Hutch to post and share more of those great trains videos... Every time Hutch does that, it seems to drive that one troll, even nuttier...
