I suspect the sets will not remain in service after the new equipment arrives. The similar HHP8000's were retired several years ago before the older AEM7s (original and rebuilt) due to higher operating costs. An Amtrak person told me the HHP8000's averaged something like 90 cents / mile to operate compared to the rebuilt AEM7's (AC equipment) that averaged something like 50 cents. The current ACELA fleet requires two locomotives per train set because of its great weight due to earlier crash standards compared to the crash energy management approach in newer designs.
