Ancient days, when riding GGT commute bus, it was amusing and sometimes frightening seeing what people in the (mostly stopped) cars around us were doing. A great place to observe that (from the higher position of a bus seat, in the days before SUVs and lifted pickups as commute vehicles, and before cell phones had been invented) was on the south side of Cal Park Hill (way before the widening and carpool lane connection through San Rafael). Makeup, changing clothes (!), noshing on anything from coffee/donut to full hot breakfast, manicures, pedicures (yes, once), on and on. In the same general area (northbound carpool lane, which the buses used, ended at Corte Madera), we were hit one afternoon by somebody in a pickup truck who decided to move to the left lane (which was still carpool at that point, and he wasn't) directly into the side of the bus. We were late getting home, had to spend almost an hour at Lucky (?) Drive waiting for and dealing with him and CHP.

Many drivers on public roads, with or without railroad involvement, can be relied on to be doing anything but attending to driving.
