IIRC, Lee had nothing to do with the 3985 restoration. If course the people who did do that work had no UP money or labor, unlike someone who had unlimited funding and manpower later on, yet still just barely got it out the door, unfinished, in time.

Then there were the flat wheels, the 3- year boiler wash, the missed commitments, the derailments, delays, road failures and reliance on diesels pushing.

If 3985 really was "held together with duct tape and string" for 30 years, then I want some of that stuff.
