Joe Strapac mentioned cooling issues with the higher horsepower Sulzer prime movers; even with the larger cores the dynamic brake grids had to be moved from the stock GE location inside the radiator cores, to a location on the roof behind the cab. This occurred after overheating on the initial runs of the rebuilt " Popsicles".
The Sulzer entity made another run at the U.S. Locomotive market in the 1980's ??? I recall Santa Fe had a few in SD-45 bodies. I also recall reading that EMD & GE were NOT receptive to the idea, and didn't supply much ( if any ) engineering or parts support for " Foreign " prime movers in " Their " locomotives. I'm sure the Sulzer Tug Boat engines received more maintenance - more often, than Espee was willing or able to give. ( Then again, so does my lawnmower !!! )
Regards the Fairbanks - Morse Opposed Piston engine, the biggest issue I've read about was having to remove the upper crankshaft for any serious maintenance, such as replacing cylinder liners or pistons. A high clearance overhead crane was a necessity. One BIG advantage of F-M diesel locomotives was their use of the excellent Westinghouse main generator and traction motors - the best in the business.
