Is it possible to engineer a tunnel thru a fault line? Sounds pretty tricky.

I know from a recent article on the 2 new base tunnels in Switzerland that soft strata is more of a problem than hard and that they bend these bores to avoid stuff that is too loose to support the mining machine and the tunnel walls. The New Yorker article also pointed out something that should have been obvious but surprised me - they avoid tunneling under the peaks.
