Just for S&Gs, I looked it up in my trusty Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, and "gauntlet" is a glove, while "gantlet" is the overlapping trackage. The two words have different origins: "gauntlet" is from a French word for glove gantelet, while "gantlet" is derived from the Swedish word gatlopp, "running down a lane". However, sometimes "gauntlet", the glove, is spelled "gantlet". The spelling and usage might also depend on whether you're using US English or British English.
