Hutch,
NZR first road Diesels and the dc voltage Electrics were all one man driven from the centre, the assistant's seat on the diesels being crammed in on the left as an afterthought. Our EF&CA union wouldn't concede to one-man until the early 1990's.
The later GM, EE and GE built diesels were righthand controls. The first 3 models of endcab diesel-mechanical shunters were dual controls facing forward as was the endcab road shunter class. The first design of centrecab shunters were dual controls but lefthand forward orientatation, the two later classes of centrecabs were righthand side controls.
And we run lefthand on Double tracked lines.
