Must admit that I never heard of that.

That would be the most logical modification, i.e. change the blower drive gears in the camshaft drive, rear gear train. Such was done when up-grading 567 engines to 645 power assemblies, necessitating the increased speed of the roots blowers, and different fuel injector tips.

No, as most likely the CB&Q made the modification themselves, with technical advice from EMD.
