SMART Chairman is Not a Friend of Freight

After one public speaker recommended the board include ballot language about how SMART’s northern extension would boost freight operations and remove trucks from the highway, SMART staff said it would be difficult to include in the language without having collected data on this. Instead, this information could be presented as the agency begins public outreach on the measure leading up to the election.

“SMART is not in the freight business,” board chairman and San Rafael mayor Gary Phillips added.

Does Mayor Phillips of San Rafael (and SMART Chair) know that freight is operating on SMART owned tracks and future oversight is going to be conducted by SMART?
