Tony-
Crescent City never did have a rail connection to the outside world. At one time a local lumber company, Hobbs, Wall & Co., had a logging railroad that first went north to Smith River and then later went into the woods south of town. They actually did run the line north to Smith River as a common carrier for a few years. A few years later another lumber outfit up in Brookings built a logging railroad that came south as far as Smith River, almost connecting with the then already abandoned Hobbs, Wall & Company railroad.
The NWP seriously considered extending their lines from Trinidad north to Crescent City, but never did so. The only other rail connection to the outside world that almost happened was an independent railroad that intended to build southwest from Grants Pass, OR...it only made it a few miles out of town before its construction dreams died.
