silly question - how to post pictures

I'm sure this is right in front of me someplace, but I don't seem to be getting anywhere with searches -- how do you post pictures here? I presume they have to be available on some other site like railpictures or flickr (from looking at properties of some of the ones posted), but how do you get it to show up as a picture rather than just a link to the other site?
