Short answer: It doesn't.
But, from my experience with this segment, you will probably hear a lot about how the evil electric wires, will somehow make the airplanes fall out the sky, if hundreds of millions aren't spend to put this deep into the Tujunga wash water table, in a tunnel at this location.
There are some very legitimate issues with electromagnetic interference, as there are even with things like interference from local power lines. But, many of these kind of issues are successfully mitigated all over the world, without any need to spend hundreds of millions on a tunnel.
Remember, this is on the side of the airport against the Verdugo Mountains, and not an "approach" or "take off" direction, as those of you who've been to Burbank Airport will note. Which is not the case with the Crenshaw line, which will likely be used as an attempt to justify this "need", for what could easily be a couple of hundred million dollar tunnel.
It's a proposal that appears to be reflective of both the questionable level of competence at MTA commute and intercity planning, and the sheer venality and arrogance at the CAHSRA "runaway money train".
Your tax dollars at work... Because we have the best "gubmint" that money can buy...
