The initial concept of SMART as DMU's and not longer locomotive hauled passengers trains was based in part on the traffic disruption it would cause. All the downtown locations San Rafael,Novato, Petaluma and Santa Rosa have stations with a short section of track boxed in by busy street crossings on each end.
