Re: Coast Starlight revival? An interesting website... And, some interesting responses...
Haven't we seen this Corridor Capital bunch before somewhere? Ah yes, it's not "
Corridor Capital" (that's a different bunch) - it's
Corridor Rail. Yes, they have a bunch of old hi-levels. After Amtrak picked up a few back in the day, (can still be seen serving as coack-snack cars on Cal-Amtrak trains), I guess these guys got the rest. Ah ... check the date (2015) on the slide deck.
The cars most likely would need a gut-and-rebuild job to get back on the road. Won't be cheap, but possibly less than finding somebody to build new. A modern (2020s) incarnation would of course use Siemens power rather than F59PHIs. Then, there's dealing with UP.
As for hourly or better - that's not what these guys were proposing. And even if you add up Greyhound, Bolt, Megabus, and Amtrak there isn't hourly service available now. Bob: were your studies for Daylight (LOSSAN extension) trains ever published somewhere? Just wondering, for research purposes.
And just for fun: it was possible in 2011, and might still be (research opportunity?) to get from SF to LA using only public transit (the writer took the train back...). [
