I have a good friend who's retired up in Kla-"meth" Falls, who had a place out near Merrill for a while. Much of it (unfortunately in several cases like the increasingly bad condition of the Sierra equipment...) is junk, and much of it clearly arrived as junk, as you note.
Maybe part of my bias is that most of the times I've seen the collection, it has been with the snow melting off of these rusting hulks, out in the open, that makes me more reluctant to endorse outdoor storage at Merrill.
As others have noted for many "years" right here on AP, with similar knowledge of the state of this "collection", if the one or two pieces that might be "recoverable" were not "saved" "soon", they'd be "lost". And, so far, nothing real has ever happened in that 15 years or so of "soon" that have passed since "then", that I've heard of....?
