If you can find a copy Thomas Ploss's book "The Nation Pays Again" gies into the Milwaukee Bankruptcy in dept. He was their General Consul at the time. He talks aloud the Pacific Extension and basically how do to inept Management the railroad put it into a death spiral, soon followed by the rest of the railroad.

Once in bankruptcy the Milwaukee Road (and the Rock Island) became worth far more dead than alive.
